Description
In the current pictures of this helmet, the two helmet sections are not attached to each other. The mask is merely just pushed up against the back part of the helmet section for these pictures. This Roman Standard Bearer's Signifer Armored Masked Cavalry Sports Helmet is sold in two parts. The complete helmet has been made in two separate pieces of silvered bronze. This is the first time that I have remade this helmet in about 15 years or so. The pictured helmet is my first Vize helmet I have made since. You get it dissembled in two pieces for the listed price and you put it together. However if you want me to install the correct hinges, the leather belt work to hold the front of the mask to the back of the helmet and the also do the inside padding work, I will do it for 9 extra. This helmet can also have brass side plum holders installed on both sides along with two ostrich plums inserted for 9 extra. I can also install a crest box with horse hair crest for 9 extra. I can also do some gold gild work on the raised art pieces to make it more attractive. This is done by mixing gold dust with wax, applying it on and letting it dry and then polishing it. This extra gold highlight work cost 0 extra. I can also age or antique this helmet for 0. This is a time consuming process but it has it's vast rewards in the fact that it brings out the art work better and gives it more of an old collectors look such as collections of well toned ancient coins which not only look better when toned or aged but it makes the coins a lot more valuable.Below is the description of the scene unraveling around the helmet and it's interpretation based on known Roman myths.
This Roman masked helmet from Vize Thrace depicting the sea monster Scylla destroying ships while drowning soldiers and sea creatures can be seen in the water. Scylla is seen here as on a denarius of Sextus Pompey wielding a ships rudder being part female to the waist turning into two fish tails with the front part of dogs coming out of her. Each of the helmets cheek pieces display Victory carrying a trophy of arms over her shoulder. The silvered hair is crowned by the corona aurea or gold crown. This gold crown should not be taken lightly for just a design as it was most likely awarded to the soldier. It was given by the Romans as an extraordinary recompence of bravery or for saving the life of a fellow Roman. Only those who were awarded this crown could wear them in public places. Wearing unearned metals or awards is still a criminal offence today. Rosettas and scroll work can be seen on the neck guard along with rope work throughout the piece. Dr. Ernst Künzl, masked helmet expert and curator of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum had this to say about my new helmet..''The Vize masked helmet is one of the most impressive works of Roman craftmanship in the Early Empire, and your re-creation fits to the rank of the original''…
For Roman standard bearers ( Signifers / Aquilifers ), both wolf skins and bear skins are in stock and available.
